Voltaren (diclofenac sodium)
Indications
Voltaren is indicated for:
- Relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
- Acute or long-term relief of the signs and symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis
Dosage and Administration
- Carefully consider the potential benefits and risks before deciding to use Voltaren.
- Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration to meet individual treatment goals.
- Adjust the dose and frequency based on the patient’s response to initial therapy.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosages.
- Do not use Voltaren for conditions other than those specified without consulting a healthcare professional.
Mechanism of Action
Voltaren works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX). This reduces the formation of substances called prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins are responsible for causing inflammation, pain, and fever. By decreasing their production, Voltaren helps to relieve inflammation and pain.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Diclofenac.
- History of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
- Managing pain after heart bypass surgery.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects:

Serious Side Effects:
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- High blood pressure

- Liver problems
- Gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration
Precautions
- You can’t use Voltaren as a substitute for corticosteroids or to treat corticosteroid insufficiency. Stopping corticosteroids suddenly can worsen your condition, so it’s recommended to taper off gradually.
- Voltaren’s ability to reduce fever and inflammation might hide signs of complications in noninfectious, painful conditions.
- If you have asthma or other respiratory conditions, use Voltaren with caution, as NSAIDs can make these conditions worse.
- Make sure to regularly monitor your blood pressure during treatment because Voltaren can cause or worsen hypertension.
- Be aware of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare provider immediately.
Storage Instructions
- Do not store above 30°C (86°F).
- Protect from moisture.
- Dispense in a tight container
