What is Rybelsus?
Rybelsus is a brand name prescription medicine used with a healthy diet and proper exercise to control blood sugar (glucose) levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medication is not prescribed to patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
How does Rybelsus work?
Rybelsus contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist. Rybelsus (semaglutide) works in lowering blood sugar in three different ways:
- Stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin when the blood sugar is high.
- Prevents the liver from producing and releasing too much sugar.
- Delays gastric emptying (slows food leaving the stomach after eating).
Rybelsus Tablet Dosage Guide
Rybelsus comes in tablet form and is available in three different strengths: 3mg, 7mg and 14 mg. These tablets should be taken orally on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before your first meal, drink, or other oral medicines with a sip of no more than 4 ounces of plain water. Be sure to swallow the tablet whole and not to break, chew or crush it. The recommended Rybelsus dosage is 3 mg once per day for 30 days. Rybelsus 3 mg dosage is for treatment initiation and ineffective for blood sugar control. After 30 days of taking Rybelsus 3mg, the dosage may be increased to 7 mg once per day. If additional blood sugar control is needed after at least 30 days on 7 mg dosage, you may increase your dosage to 14 mg once daily.
