Pulmicort Inhaler (budesonide)

Indications

  • Asthma Maintenance Therapy Used to prevent asthma attacks (bronchospasms) in adults and children who require ongoing treatment.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Helps reduce inflammation in the airways and improve breathing in patients with COPD.
  • Nebulization Therapy Can be used with a nebulizer for severe asthma attacks or exacerbations under medical supervision.

Dosage and Administration

  • Follow your doctor’s prescribed dosage and inhalation technique strictly.
  • Prime the inhaler if it’s new or hasn’t been used for more than a week.
  • Breathe out fully, then place the inhaler mouthpiece between your lips and inhale deeply and forcefully.
  • Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly.
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use to prevent throat irritation.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency of inhalation.
  • Avoid using the inhaler if it appears damaged or if the medication has expired.
  • Do not share your inhaler with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
  • Do not use for sudden asthma attacks; use a rescue inhaler (e.g., albuterol) for acute symptoms.

Mechanism of Action

Budesonide is a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation in the airways. It inhibits the release of inflammatory substances in the lungs, thereby preventing asthma attacks and improving symptoms of COPD.

Contraindications

  • Do not use it if you are allergic to budesonide or any component of the inhaler.
  • Avoid during acute asthma exacerbations; use short-acting bronchodilators instead.
  • Not suitable for patients with untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections of the respiratory tract.
  • Avoid in patients with tuberculosis or recent exposure to tuberculosis.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking to avoid interactions.
  • Disclose your complete medical history, especially of infections, osteoporosis, and adrenal gland problems.
  • Use with caution in patients with liver disease or diabetes.
  • Monitor bone density if using long-term, as corticosteroids may increase the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles if not immune, as corticosteroids can worsen these infections.

Storage Instructions
