Protonix (pantoprazole)
Indications
Protonix is used for the treatment and management of:
- Short-term treatment (7 to 10 days) of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) associated with a history of erosive esophagitis.
- Pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
Dosage and Administration
- Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before starting Protonix and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider.
- Take Protonix by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
- Take tablets with or without food.
- Swallow the tablets whole.
- Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit. Take it at the same time each day.
- Continue taking Protonix for the prescribed length of treatment even if you feel better.
- Inform your healthcare provider if your condition persists or worsens.
- Do not split, crush, or chew Protonix tablets.
Mechanism of Action
Pantoprazole, the active ingredient in Protonix, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking the enzyme in the stomach wall that produces acid, reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. This helps treat acid-related conditions of the stomach and esophagus.
Contraindications
Protonix should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or to substituted Benzimidazoles.
