Precautions
- Even if Prilosec helps with your symptoms, it doesn’t rule out the risk of stomach cancer. Make sure to get additional tests to check for this.
- Some people using this capsule may develop sudden kidney problems. If this happens, stop taking Prilosec and see your doctor.
- This medication might increase the chance of getting a type of diarrhea caused by a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. Watch for signs and seek medical attention if necessary.
- Using this medication for a long time or taking it frequently could raise the chances of breaking bones in your hip, wrist, or spine.
- Prilosec might worsen lupus or cause it to appear for the first time. If you have lupus symptoms, talk to your doctor about stopping Prilosec and seeing a specialist.
- Avoid taking Prilosec with clopidogrel, a blood thinner, as it can interfere with its effectiveness.
- Long-term use of Prilosec might prevent your body from absorbing enough vitamin B-12. Your doctor may monitor your levels.
- There have been cases of low magnesium levels in people taking Prilosec for a long time. Your doctor may check your magnesium levels while you’re on this medication.
- Avoid taking Prilosec with St. John’s Wort or Rifampin, as they can reduce how well Prilosec works.
