Parnate (tranylcypromine)
Indications
- Parnate tablets are prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who have not responded adequately to other antidepressant therapies.

- Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Mechanism of Action
Parnate belongs to a class of medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It works by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. By increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, Parnate helps alleviate symptoms of depression.
Contraindications
- Do not use Parnate if you have a history of hypersensitivity to tranylcypromine or other MAOIs.
- Avoid Parnate if you are taking certain medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, or sympathomimetic agents, as interactions can lead to serious side effects.
- Parnate should not be used in patients with a history of pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal gland) or severe liver disease.
