Oralair (grass pollen extract)

Indications

  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Oralair tablets are prescribed for the treatment of allergic rhinitis caused by grass pollen. It is specifically designed for people who are allergic to five common grass pollens: Sweet Vernal, Orchard, Perennial Rye, Timothy, and Kentucky Blue Grass.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: Also used for relieving symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, such as itchy, watery, and red eyes associated with grass pollen allergy.

Ingredients

  • Active Ingredient: Extracts of pollen from five grass species: Sweet Vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum), Orchard (Dactylis glomerata), Perennial Rye (Lolium perenne), Timothy (Phleum pratense), and Kentucky Blue Grass (Poa pratensis).
  • Inactive Ingredients: Mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate.

Dosage and Administration

  • Start taking Oralair tablets approximately four months before the grass pollen season begins and continue throughout the season as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Place the tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely before swallowing. Do not chew or swallow the tablet whole.
  • Take the first dose under medical supervision due to the risk of an allergic reaction. Subsequent doses can be taken at home.
  • Continue taking the tablet daily, preferably at the same time each day, to maintain consistent relief from allergy symptoms.
  • Do not eat or drink for at least five minutes before and after taking Oralair to ensure proper absorption.
  • Avoid taking Oralair if you have severe, uncontrolled asthma.
  • Avoid stopping the medication abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may reduce its effectiveness.

Mechanism of Action

Oralair tablets work by gradually desensitizing the immune system to grass pollen allergens. By exposing the body to small, controlled amounts of grass pollen extracts, Oralair helps the immune system become less reactive to these allergens over time. This process, known as allergen immunotherapy, reduces the severity of allergic reactions and alleviates symptoms associated with grass pollen allergies.

Contraindications

  • Severe Asthma: Do not use Oralair if you have severe, uncontrolled asthma.
  • Allergic Reaction to Grass Pollen Extracts: Avoid use if you have had a severe allergic reaction to grass pollen extracts in the past.
  • Immune System Disorders: Avoid using Oralair if you have certain immune system disorders or if you are on immunosuppressive therapy.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Itching or mild swelling in the mouth, lips, or tongue
  • Throat irritation or discomfort
  • Ear itching

  • Nausea

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe mouth or throat swelling
  • Chest tightness or wheezing
  • Persistent and severe itching or pain in the mouth or throat

Precautions

  • The first dose of Oralair should be taken in a healthcare setting where you can be monitored for any signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Carry an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) with you at all times during the first few months of treatment, especially after taking your dose, in case of a severe allergic reaction.
  • Avoid using Oralair if you have recently had oral surgery, dental work, or have mouth sores, as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.
  • If you experience severe or persistent side effects, discontinue use immediately and contact your healthcare provider.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Oralair tablets in their original packaging at room temperature, between 59°F and 77°F (15°C and 25°C).
