Mirapex (pramipexole)
Indications
- Mirapex Extended-Release tablets are indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement and muscle control.
- It is also prescribed for the management of moderate to severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS), a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Mirapex exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take Mirapex with or without food; however, taking it with food may help reduce nausea.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one; simply take the next dose as scheduled.
- Avoid abruptly stopping Mirapex without consulting your doctor, as this may lead to withdrawal symptoms or worsening of Parkinson’s symptoms.
Mechanism of Action
Mirapex belongs to a class of medications called dopamine agonists. They work by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, mimicking the effects of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in controlling movement and coordination. By increasing dopamine activity, Mirapex helps improve motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Contraindications
- Allergic Reaction: Do not take Mirapex if you have a known allergy to Pramipexole or any other ingredients in the medication.
- Severe Renal Impairment: It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min), as dosage adjustment may be necessary.
- Children: Mirapex is not recommended for use in children under the age of 18 years.

Serious Side Effects:

- Monitor for Behavioral Changes: Be vigilant for any unusual changes in behavior, such as compulsive behaviors or hallucinations, and report them to your healthcare provider.
- Avoid Abrupt Changes: Do gradual changes in dosage under the supervision of your doctor to minimize the risk of adverse effects.
