Mevacor (lovastatin)
Indications
- Mevacor tablets are indicated for the treatment of high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
- It helps to lower levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the blood while raising levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL).
Dosage and Administration
- Take Mevacor tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily with the evening meal.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water.
- Maintain a consistent diet low in cholesterol and fat to enhance the effectiveness of Mevacor.
- Attend regular follow-up appointments with your doctor to monitor your cholesterol levels and adjust the dose if necessary.
- Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose of Mevacor or take it more frequently than directed by your doctor.
- Avoid drinking large quantities of grapefruit juice while taking Mevacor, as it can increase the medication levels in your blood and lead to adverse effects.
- Do not stop taking Mevacor abruptly without consulting your doctor, as it may cause your cholesterol levels to increase.
- Do not share your medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
Mechanism of Action
Mevacor contains Lovastatin, which belongs to a class of drugs known as statins. It works by inhibiting an enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) involved in the production of cholesterol in the liver. This action helps to reduce the levels of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood.

- Do not use Mevacor if you have a known allergy to Lovastatin or any other ingredients in the tablets.
- Avoid Mevacor if you have active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of liver enzymes.
- Consult your doctor before using Mevacor if you have existing medical conditions, particularly liver or kidney problems.
