Lamisil (terbinafine)
Indications
Lamisil is prescribed for:
- Onychomycosis: Treatment of fungal infections of the toenails and fingernails caused by dermatophytes.
- Tinea Infections: Treatment of various tinea infections, including tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot).
- Other Fungal Infections: Treatment of certain types of yeast infections of the skin.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Lamisil tablets exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, typically one 250 mg tablet once daily.
- Continue taking the medication for the entire duration prescribed, usually 6 to 12 weeks for nail infections.
- Take Lamisil with or without food.
- Take the tablet at the same time each day to maintain an even level of medication in your body.
- Stay well-hydrated to help the medication work effectively.
- Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
- Do not skip doses; if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is close to the time for your next dose.
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Mechanism of Action
Lamisil works by inhibiting an enzyme called squalene epoxidase in fungal cells. This inhibition leads to a deficiency in ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane, and an accumulation of squalene, which is toxic to the fungus. This dual action causes the fungal cells to die, effectively treating the infection.
