Isopto Atropine Eye Drops (atropine sulfate eye drops)
Indications
- Mydriasis and Cycloplegia: Isopto Atropine Eye Drops are primarily used to dilate the pupils (mydriasis) and paralyze the ciliary muscle of the eye (cycloplegia) during diagnostic procedures or surgery.
- Uveitis: These eye drops are also prescribed to reduce pain and discomfort in patients with uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye) by preventing the muscles of the eye from contracting, thereby reducing pain and light sensitivity.
Ingredients
- Active Ingredient: Atropine sulfate.
- Inactive Ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride (as a preservative), sodium chloride, edetate disodium, purified water, and may contain sulfuric acid and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.
Dosage and Administration
- Use Isopto Atropine Eye Drops as directed by your healthcare provider, usually one or two drops in the affected eye(s) up to twice daily.
- Wash your hands before and after applying the eye drops.
- Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket, then gently squeeze the dropper to release the prescribed number of drops.
- Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes after application and press your finger to the inner corner of the eye to prevent the drops from draining away too quickly.
- Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including your eye or hands, to avoid contamination.
- Avoid using Isopto Atropine Eye Drops if you have untreated glaucoma, as it can increase pressure in the eye.
- Do not drive or operate machinery immediately after using these eye drops, as they may cause blurred vision and light sensitivity.
- Avoid exposure to bright lights while your pupils are dilated, as this can increase discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Isopto Atropine Eye Drops contain atropine sulfate, an anticholinergic agent that works by blocking the effects of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in the contraction of the eye muscles. By inhibiting acetylcholine, atropine causes dilation of the pupil and paralysis of the ciliary muscle, which helps in diagnostic procedures and reduces pain associated with uveitis.
Contraindications
- Untreated Glaucoma: Isopto Atropine Eye Drops are contraindicated in patients with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, as they can further increase intraocular pressure.
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use these eye drops if you have a known hypersensitivity to atropine sulfate or any other components of the formulation.
- Down Syndrome: Use with caution in patients with Down syndrome, as they may be more susceptible to systemic side effects.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects:
- Temporary blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- Dry mouth
- Eye irritation or redness
Serious Side Effects:
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Severe eye pain
- Sudden loss of vision
- Confusion or hallucinations (rare)
Precautions
- Monitor for Increased Eye Pressure: Regularly monitor intraocular pressure, especially in patients with a history of glaucoma, as Isopto Atropine Eye Drops can cause a rise in eye pressure.
- Use in Pediatrics: Use with caution in young children, particularly infants, as they may be more susceptible to systemic effects of atropine, such as flushing and rapid heart rate.
- Avoid Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while using Isopto Atropine Eye Drops unless directed by your healthcare provider, as the preservative benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by soft lenses.
- Inform Your Healthcare Provider: Notify your healthcare provider if you have any medical conditions such as heart disease, prostate enlargement, or a history of severe eye reactions, as these may affect your treatment with Isopto Atropine.
Storage Instructions
- Store Isopto Atropine Eye Drops at room temperature, between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F).
- Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and protect it from light.
