Invega (paliperidone)
Indications
Invega is indicated for-
- Schizophrenia: Used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, including hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and emotional withdrawal.
- Bipolar Disorder: Helps manage symptoms of bipolar disorder, including manic or mixed episodes and depressive episodes, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Invega exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take the tablet once daily, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Drink plenty of fluids while taking Invega to stay hydrated.
- Do not double dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
- Avoid alcohol as it can increase the risk of side effects.
- Do not stop taking Invega suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms or a relapse of your condition.
Mechanism of Action
Invega is an antipsychotic medication that works by blocking the action of dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain. This helps to regulate the activity of certain neurotransmitters involved in the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, leading to a reduction in symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and mood disturbances.
Contraindications
- Allergic Reactions: Do not use it if you are allergic to Paliperidone or any of the ingredients in Invega.
- Parkinson’s Disease: Contraindicated in patients with Parkinson’s disease or a history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS).
- Severe Renal Impairment: Avoid use in patients with severe renal impairment (kidney problems).
- QT Prolongation: Not recommended for patients with a history of QT prolongation or other significant heart rhythm abnormalities.
- Breastfeeding: Avoid breastfeeding while taking Invega, as it may pass into breast milk and harm the baby.
