Indications: Galliprant (grapiprant) is indicated for controlling pain and inflammation associated with dogs with osteoarthritis (1). The Galliprant medication above is manufactured by Elanco.
Ingredients: Galliprant contains the active ingredient grapiprant. The inactive ingredients include desiccated pork liver as the flavoring agent.
Directions: Follow your veterinarian’s prescription exactly.
- Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration based on your dog’s response. The recommended dose is 0.9 mg per pound (2 mg per kg) once daily.
- Only the 20 mg and 60 mg tablets are scored and should be used in half-tablet increments when needed. Dogs under 8 lbs (3.6 kg) cannot be accurately dosed.
- The 100 mg tablet is n ot scored and should not be broken, as the active ingredient may not be evenly distributed.
- For dogs over 150 lbs (68 kg), use a combination of whole and half tablets to achieve the correct dose.
Do not use Galliprant if your dog is allergic to grapiprant. Your dog should not take Galliprant if it is already taking aspirin, other NSAIDs like carprofen or meloxicam, or corticosteroids like prednisone, unless directed by your vet. Do not use it if your dog has had an allergic reaction such as hives, facial swelling, or itchy skin. Avoid Galliprant if your dog has bloody stool or vomit, a pre-existing kidney or liver condition, or any condition that causes dehydration. Do not give it if your dog has lost its appetite or weighs less than 8 pounds. Galliprant is for dogs only. Do not use it in cats. People should not take Galliprant. If accidentally ingested, seek medical help immediately.
Common Side Effects: The most common side effects involve the digestive system, including diarrhea, soft mucoid stools, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Liver and kidney problems have also been reported.
Serious Side Effects: Galliprant may cause serious side effects that can occur with or without warning and, in some cases, may be fatal. Stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following signs: changes in bowel movements such as diarrhea, soft mucoid stool, or black, tarry, or bloody stool, vomiting, decreased appetite, changes in behavior like depression or restlessness, incoordination or seizures, changes in drinking or urination, or yellowing of gums, skin, or whites of the eyes (jaundice). This list of signs is not complete. In case you experience other signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Before giving Galliprant to your dog, tell your veterinarian if your dog:
- Is younger than 9 months or weighs less than 8 lbs (3.6 kg)
- Is used for breeding
- Is pregnant or lactating
- Has a history of gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody stools
- Has liver, kidney, or heart problems
- Is dehydrated or on diuretic therapy
- Has had a reaction to NSAIDs before
- Is undergoing surgery and will receive anesthetic drugs
- Is taking any other medications, especially NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or protein-bound drugs
Galliprant is an NSAID that may cause gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver issues. If used long-term, regular monitoring is needed. Do not give Galliprant with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Talk to your veterinarian about washout periods when switching medications. If additional pain relief is required, a non-NSAID/non-corticosteroid medication may be needed. Galliprant has not been studied in dogs with heart disease. It is unclear if dogs with sulfonamide allergies may react to Galliprant. If your dog shows any signs of an adverse reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately.
