Flonase (fluticasone propionate nasal spray)

Indications

Flonase Nasal Spray is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Allergic Rhinitis: Relieves symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose.
  • Non-Allergic Rhinitis: Helps alleviate symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and nasal irritation.
  • Nasal Polyps: Used as a complementary therapy in managing nasal polyps in patients 18 years of age and older.

Dosage and Administration

  • Shake the Flonase nasal spray gently before each use to ensure proper mixing of the medication.
  • Prime the Spray. Before the first use or if the spray has not been used for more than 7 days, prime the pump by spraying several times until a fine mist is produced.
  • Insert the nozzle into one nostril, close the other nostril with your finger, and aim slightly away from the nasal septum. Press down firmly on the pump to release the spray while inhaling gently through the nostril.
  • Use Flonase Nasal Spray regularly, as directed by your doctor, even if you do not have symptoms.
  • Do not share your Flonase nasal spray with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
  • Avoid getting the spray into your eyes. If accidental eye contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage unless instructed by your doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Flonase Nasal Spray contains Fluticasone Propionate, a synthetic corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. It works locally in the nasal passages to reduce inflammation, swelling, and irritation caused by allergic and non-allergic triggers. By alleviating nasal symptoms, Flonase helps improve nasal airflow and quality of life for individuals with rhinitis or nasal polyps.

Contraindications

Flonase Nasal Spray should not be used if you:

  • Are Allergic to Fluticasone: Any known hypersensitivity to Fluticasone Propionate or any component of Flonase nasal spray.
  • Have Untreated Infections: Flonase may worsen certain untreated infections, such as fungal, bacterial, or viral infections of the nasal passages.
  • Are Under 4 Years Old: Flonase is not recommended for children under 4 years of age.

Precautions

  • Monitor for adverse effects by being vigilant for any signs of nasal irritation, bleeding, or changes in your sense of smell while using Flonase.
  • Consult your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve after several days of using Flonase or if they worsen over time.
  • Avoid abrupt discontinuation of Flonase. If you need to stop using it, gradually taper off to avoid rebound congestion or other withdrawal symptoms.
