Coreg (carvedilol)
Indications
Coreg is an alpha-/beta-adrenergic blocking agent indicated for the treatment of:
- Mild to severe chronic heart failure
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction in clinically stable patients
- Hypertension
Dosage and Administration
- Take Coreg exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take Coreg at the same time each day.
- Take it with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.
- Do not stop taking Coreg abruptly without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may lead to acute exacerbation of coronary artery disease.
- Do not take more than the prescribed dose of Coreg.
- Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Coreg, as it may increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness.
- Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Coreg affects you.
Your doctor may need to adjust your dose based on your response to treatment and any side effects.
Mechanism of Action
Coreg works by blocking the action of certain natural substances in the body, including adrenaline. It relaxes blood vessels and slows the heart rate, which helps to lower blood pressure and improve heart function.

- Bronchial asthma or related bronchospastic conditions
- Second- or third-degree AV block
- Sick sinus syndrome
- Severe bradycardia (unless a permanent pacemaker is in place)
- Patients in cardiogenic shock or heart failure requiring the use of IV inotropic therapy
- Severe hepatic impairment
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Carvedilol or any of its components

- Dizziness

Serious Side Effects:
- Shortness of breath

Precautions
- Coronary Artery Disease: Do not abruptly discontinue Coreg to avoid an acute worsening of your coronary artery disease.
- Bradycardia and Hypotension: Monitor yourself for symptoms of a slow heart rate or low blood pressure. You may need dose adjustments.
- Respiratory Conditions: If you have non-allergic bronchospasm, use Coreg with caution and at the lowest effective dose.
- Diabetes: Regularly monitor your blood glucose levels, as Coreg may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia or worsen hyperglycemia.
