Indications
Cogentin is used to treat:
- All types of Parkinson’s disease.
- Movement problems caused by certain medications (but not tardive dyskinesia).
Dosage and Administration
- Take Cogentin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take it 1 to 2 times a day, either in the morning or at bedtime.
- Take it with or without food.
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dry mouth and constipation.
- Consult your doctor if you need dosage adjustments based on your response and side effects.
- Do not skip doses or change your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
- Avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
- Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Cogentin affects you, as it can cause drowsiness or blurred vision.
- Avoid taking other medications without consulting your healthcare provider, especially those affecting the nervous system.
Mechanism of Action
Cogentin works by blocking acetylcholine receptors in the brain, which helps to restore the balance of acetylcholine and dopamine. This action helps reduce the symptoms of Parkinsonism and certain drug-induced movement disorders.
