Ciprodex (ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone)
Indications
Ciprodex combines Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, and Dexamethasone, a steroid. It treats ear infections caused by certain bacteria in:
- Middle Ear Infections (AOM): For children (6 months and older) with ear tubes, caused by specific bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Outer Ear Infections (AOE): For children (6 months and older), adults, and elderly patients, caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Dosage and Administration
- Use Ciprodex exactly as your doctor tells you to.
- Read the detailed instructions for use that come with Ciprodex.
- Apply 4 drops of Ciprodex into the affected ear twice a day for 7 days.
- Finish the full course of treatment even if your symptoms improve.
- Do not use Ciprodex in the eye or inject it.
- Do not stop using Ciprodex unless your doctor tells you to. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days, call your doctor.
- Call your doctor if you have fluid draining from your ear after finishing Ciprodex or if fluid drains from your ear two or more times within six months after treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprodex works by combining two medications: Ciprofloxacin and Dexamethasone. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing the infection by preventing them from making and repairing their DNA. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, helping to alleviate pain and swelling in the ear.
Contraindications
- Do not use Ciprodex if you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any ingredients in the medication.
- Do not use Ciprodex if you have viral infections of the outer ear canal, including herpes simplex, or fungal ear infections.
