Biaxin (clarithromycin)
Indications
- Use Biaxin to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
- You can use it to treat skin infections and ear infections (otitis media).
- It is effective in treating Helicobacter pylori infections, which are associated with duodenal ulcers.
- Use it as part of combination therapy to eradicate H. pylori and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Biaxin exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice daily (every 12 hours).
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- You can take Biaxin with or without food but taking it with food can help reduce stomach upset.
- Complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better before finishing the medication to ensure the infection is fully eradicated.
- Do not take more than the prescribed dose; overdose can lead to severe side effects.
- Avoid taking Biaxin if you are taking certain medications that can interact with clarithromycin, such as certain cholesterol medications (statins), blood thinners (warfarin), and other antibiotics.
- Do not skip doses or stop taking Biaxin early, as this can lead to antibiotic resistance.
- Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Biaxin, as it can increase the risk of side effects such as stomach upset and dizziness.
Mechanism of Action
Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of the bacteria, preventing the bacteria from growing and multiplying, ultimately leading to their death.
Contraindications
- Do not use Biaxin if you are allergic to clarithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Avoid taking Biaxin if you have a history of liver problems or jaundice associated with previous clarithromycin use.
- Do not use it if you have a history of QT prolongation or ventricular cardiac arrhythmia, including torsades de pointes.
- Avoid taking Biaxin if you are taking medications that can cause serious interactions, such as cisapride, pimozide, or ergotamine.
