Avalide (irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide)
Indications
- Avalide is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
- It helps lower blood pressure to reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Avalide exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, preferably in the morning to avoid nighttime urination.
- Continue taking Avalide even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often has no symptoms.
- Do not skip doses or stop taking Avalide without consulting your doctor.
- Avoid taking Avalide with alcohol, as it can increase the risk of side effects such as dizziness.
- Avoid taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without your doctor’s approval.
Mechanism of Action
Avalide contains two active ingredients: irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking the action of a natural substance that tightens blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that helps your body get rid of excess salt and water by increasing urine output. Together, they help lower blood pressure more effectively than either drug alone.
Contraindications
- Do not use Avalide if you are allergic to irbesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any of the inactive ingredients.
- Avoid Avalide if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as it can harm the baby.
- Do not take Avalide if you have severe kidney disease or are unable to urinate.
- Avoid using Avalide if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to sulfa drugs.
- Do not take Avalide if you have severe liver disease, or a condition called anuria (no urine production).
