Atrovent Nasal Spray (ipratropium bromide)
Indications
- Atrovent Nasal Spray is used to relieve symptoms of a runny nose (rhinorrhea) associated with seasonal allergies or the common cold.
- It helps reduce nasal discharge by decreasing the production of mucus in the nasal passages.
- Atrovent Nasal Spray is also effective in managing symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis.
Dosage and Administration
- Use Atrovent Nasal Spray exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically 2 sprays in each nostril 2-3 times daily.
- Prime the spray pump before the first use by releasing 7 test sprays into the air, away from your face.
- Blow your nose gently before using nasal spray to clear the nasal passages.
- Insert the tip of the spray bottle into one nostril, close the other nostril with your finger, and spray while inhaling gently through the nose.
- Repeat the process for the other nostril.
- Wipe the tip of the spray bottle with a clean tissue after each use and replace the cap securely.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting your doctor.
- Avoid spraying Atrovent into your eyes.
- Avoid using other nasal medications without your doctor’s advice.
- Do not share your nasal spray with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
Mechanism of Action
Atrovent Nasal Spray contains ipratropium bromide, an anticholinergic agent. It works by inhibiting the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates the secretion of mucus in the nasal passages. By blocking acetylcholine, Atrovent reduces mucus production and helps dry up a runny nose.
Contraindications
- Do not use Atrovent Nasal Spray if you are allergic to ipratropium or any of its ingredients.
- Avoid using Atrovent if you have a history of hypersensitivity to atropine or its derivatives.
- Do not use Atrovent Nasal Spray in children under the age of 6 years without consulting a pediatrician.
