Aczone (dapsone)
Indications
- Aczone is used to treat acne vulgaris in individuals 12 years of age and older.
- It helps reduce the number of acne lesions and inflammation associated with acne.
- Aczone is effective in managing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne.
Dosage and Administration
- Use Aczone exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually applied once or twice daily.
- Cleanse the affected area with a mild soap and water, then pat dry before applying the gel.
- Apply a thin layer of Aczone to the entire affected area, not just the individual pimples.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel.
- Continue using Aczone for the full duration of treatment, even if your acne improves before the end of the prescribed period.
- Do not apply Aczone to broken or irritated skin.
- Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Do not use more than the prescribed amount or apply more frequently, as this will not improve results and may increase the risk of side effects.
- Avoid using other acne medications on the treated area unless directed by your doctor.
- Do not expose the treated area to excessive sunlight or artificial UV light without protection.
Mechanism of Action
Aczone contains dapsone, an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation. It is thought to interfere with the synthesis of bacterial folic acid, which is necessary for bacterial growth. By reducing the bacterial population on the skin and inflammation, Aczone helps clear up acne lesions and prevent new ones from forming.
Contraindications
- Do not use Aczone if you are allergic to dapsone or any of its ingredients.
- Avoid Aczone if you have a history of drug-induced hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells) or methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder).

- Report any severe or persistent skin irritation to your doctor immediately.
- Avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and use sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors.
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of using Aczone with your doctor.
