Linzess (linaclotide)

Indications

Linzess is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults.
  • Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults.
  • Functional constipation (FC) in pediatric patients aged 6 to 17 years.

Dosage and Administration

  • Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions. 
  • Take Linzess by mouth once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before a meal.
  • Swallow the capsules whole. If swallowing the capsule is difficult, alternative administration methods may be used. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully.
  • Use Linzess regularly at the same time each day for optimal benefit. Keep your healthcare provider informed about your condition and response to the medication.
  •  Do not break the capsules.

 The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Follow your healthcare provider’s prescribed dosage.

Mechanism of Action 

Linzess works by activating guanylate cyclase-C receptors in the intestines, which increases intestinal fluid secretion and stimulates bowel movements. 

Contraindications

  • Do not use Linzess in patients less than 2 years of age.
  • Avoid use in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Respiratory symptoms (e.g., pharyngitis, rhinitis)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe or ongoing diarrhea
  • Diarrhea with dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Unusual or severe abdominal pain with bloody or black stools

Precautions

Diarrhea may occur, and if severe, suspend dosing. In such a situation, the patient should be rehydrated.

Storage Instructions

Store Linzess at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), protecting from moisture.
