Boniva (ibandronate sodium)
Indications
- Use Boniva to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It helps reduce the risk of fractures, particularly in the spine.
- You can use it to increase bone mass in individuals with osteoporosis.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Boniva exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically once a month.
- Take the tablet first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before any food, drink, or other medications.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass (6-8 ounces) of plain water.
- Remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva to help prevent irritation of your esophagus.
- Do not lie down or recline for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva to avoid esophageal irritation.
- Avoid eating, drinking (except plain water), or taking any other medications for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva.
- Do not crush, chew, or suck on the tablet, as this can cause mouth or throat irritation.
- Do not take Boniva if you have low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia).
Mechanism of Action
Boniva is a bisphosphonate that works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It binds to bone minerals and prevents the breakdown of bone, thereby increasing bone density and reducing the risk of fractures.
