Cardura (doxazosin)
Indications
Cardura is indicated for:
- Signs and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
- Treatment of Hypertension
Dosage and Administration
- Take Cardura exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Take the medication with or without food, usually once daily in the morning or evening.
- Swallow Cardura tablets whole with a full glass of water.
- Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule.
- Do not crush or chew Cardura tablets.
- Do not take more than the prescribed dose.
- Do not stop taking Cardura suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider, as this may cause a sudden increase in blood pressure.
Mechanism of Action
Cardura is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles in the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, and in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. This action helps to lower blood pressure and improve the symptoms of BPH.
Contraindications
Cardura is contraindicated if you have hypersensitivity to Doxazosin, other Quinazolines, or any other ingredient in Cardura.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Swelling of the legs and ankles (edema)
- Shortness of breath
Serious Side Effects:
- Severe dizziness or fainting (especially when starting the medication or increasing the dose)
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Priapism (a prolonged and painful erection)
- Severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing)
Precautions
- The first dose of Cardura can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness or fainting. Take the first dose at bedtime to minimize this effect.
- Be cautious when standing up quickly from a sitting or lying position, as Cardura can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension).
- Use with caution in elderly patients, who may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug.
- Use with caution if you have liver problems, as Cardura is extensively metabolized by the liver.
- Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking, especially other blood pressure medications, to avoid potential interactions.
Storage Instructions
- Store Cardura at 25°C (77°F); temporary variations are permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
