Axert (almotriptan)
Indications
- Axert is used to treat acute migraine headaches with or without aura.
- It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other migraine symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Axert as prescribed by your doctor, usually at the first sign of a migraine.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- If your symptoms improve but return after 2 hours, you may take a second dose.
- Do not take more than 25 mg (two 12.5 mg tablets) within a 24-hour period.
- Avoid taking Axert if you have taken another migraine medication (like another triptan or ergotamine) within the past 24 hours.
- Avoid taking more than the recommended dose as it can lead to serious side effects.
Mechanism of Action
Axert contains almotriptan, a selective serotonin receptor agonist (triptan). It works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

- Avoid using Axert if you have a history of heart disease, angina, or previous heart attacks.
- Do not take Axert if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
