Transderm Scop (scopolamine)

Indications

  • Prevention of Motion Sickness: Transderm Scop patches are primarily used to prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. They are commonly used by individuals prone to seasickness, car sickness, or air travel-related nausea.
  • Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting: These patches are also indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with recovery from anesthesia and surgery.

Ingredients

  • Active Ingredient: Scopolamine
  • Inactive Ingredients: Light mineral oil, Polyisobutylene, Polypropylene pad, Aluminum backing, Silicone adhesive

Dosage and Administration

  • Apply the Transderm Scop patch behind your ear, on clean, dry, and hairless skin, at least 4 hours before travel or surgery.
  • Replace the patch every 3 days (72 hours) if continued protection is needed.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the patch to avoid transferring scopolamine to your eyes or mouth. If the patch falls off, apply a new one to a different area behind the other ear.
  • Use only one patch at a time unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Do not cut or alter the patch in any way.
  • Avoid contact with the patch while it is on your skin; if it comes into contact with your eyes, rinse immediately with water to prevent pupil dilation.
  • Do not apply more than one patch at a time to avoid overdose.
  • Do not use the patch for longer than prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Mechanism of Action

Transderm Scop (scopolamine) works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that contributes to the regulation of balance and motion. By inhibiting acetylcholine in the brain, scopolamine prevents the signals that cause motion sickness-related nausea and vomiting from reaching the brain’s vomiting center. The transdermal patch allows a steady release of scopolamine into the bloodstream over time, providing prolonged relief from symptoms.

Contraindications

  • Transderm Scop should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to scopolamine or any other components of the patch.
  • It is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, as scopolamine can increase intraocular pressure.
  • Do not use this patch if you have severe liver or kidney impairment without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid using the patch if you have a history of urinary retention or difficulty urinating, as scopolamine may worsen these conditions.
  • It should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly needed, as its effects on the unborn child are not fully understood.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Dilated pupils
  • Difficulty urinating

Serious Side Effects

  • Confusion or hallucinations
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
  • Eye pain or vision changes
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness or fainting

Precautions

  • Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, particularly if you have glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, or a history of mental health issues.
  • Be cautious when performing activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, as scopolamine may cause drowsiness or blurred vision.
  • If you wear contact lenses, be aware that the patch may cause dry eyes, so consider using lubricating eye drops.
  • Avoid overheating and dehydration while using the patch, as scopolamine can decrease sweating.
  • Notify your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms or if the patch does not seem to prevent your nausea and vomiting effectively.

Storage Instructions

  • Store the Transderm Scop patches at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Keep the patches in their original packaging until ready to use, and protect them from moisture and heat.
  • Do not store the patches in the bathroom, as humidity can affect their effectiveness.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets, as accidental exposure can cause serious side effects.
  • Dispose of used patches safely, folding them in half with the sticky sides together, and discard them in the trash away from children and pets.
