Besivance (besifloxacin)
Indications
- Besivance ophthalmic suspension is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye).
- It helps to eliminate the bacteria causing the infection, reducing inflammation and relieving symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
- Wash your hands before using Besivance eye drops.
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Instill one drop of Besivance into the affected eye(s) every 2 hours for the first 2 days, then four times daily for the next 5 days, or as directed by your doctor.
- Blink gently to spread the medication evenly across the eye surface.
- Do not touch the tip of the Besivance dropper to any surface, including your eye, to avoid contamination.
- Do not use Besivance for longer than prescribed, as this may increase the risk of resistance.
Mechanism of Action
Besivance ophthalmic suspension contains besifloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication and transcription. This action leads to bacterial cell death and eradication of the infection.
Contraindications
- Do not use Besivance eye drops if you are allergic to besifloxacin or any other ingredients in the suspension.
- Avoid Besivance if you have a viral or fungal eye infection, as it is only effective against bacterial infections.
- Consult your doctor before using Besivance if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
